The Federation of Church Schools of Shalfleet and Yarmouth

Year 2

Welcome to Sky Class, Year 2, at Shalfleet Primary

Staff – The team for Sky Class are Mrs. Thompson, Mrs Blazeby and Miss Lucas.

Fruit time – As in Year 1, the children can have a piece of fruit after break at 10:30. Key Stage One are given a free piece of fruit or vegetable as part of the government’s scheme, or they are welcome to bring a piece of fruit or a healthy snack from home.

Drinks – Each child will need to bring in a named water bottle to drink throughout the day. It does get very hot in the classroom, so they will need a drink.  Their drinks bottles are currently being kept with them at their tables so they have access to them whenever they need them.

Uniform – We ask that you regularly check that all clothing is clearly named, especially jumpers and coats, including their PE kit, and that all children are provided with a coat as we like to get the children out at playtime everyday, even in light rain, and a hat in hot weather.

P.E – Our class will have PE lessons each week, on a Monday and a Thursday.

Monday- This will also be our Outdoor learning time as well.  The children need to come into school wearing their PE kit and trainers.  During the colder months they may want to come in their outdoor PE kits- trousers and sweatshirt.  They will also need to bring in waterproofs and old shoes/welly boots for their outdoor learning.

Thursday- Again the children need to come into school wearing their PE kits.  Similar to Monday, in the cooler months they may want to come in their outdoor PE kits as PE may be inside or outside on either day.  Trainers are fine to wear on both days.

Reading – At the moment reading books are staying in school.  Every child has a school reading book and a reading record and your child will read to an adult at least once a week.  We will be doing a variety of reading activities during the week as well such as comprehension activities to help the children develop their skills.  Please be aware that sometimes the children will repeat pages or even whole books to develop fluency and accuracy and we may not necessarily change a book each time they get to the end.  This is to ensure their understanding of the story and the characters in the book. We will move them on to another book when we are confident they are ready.  As soon as we are able we will send home their books and we ask that you hear them read as much as possible and write what they have read in their reading books.  Please do continue to read and share a variety of books at home with your child.

Homework – The children will have some spellings and maths homework when we are allowed to send things home again.  There will also be times when the children have additional reading comprehension tasks sent home too.

Charlie Bear and Sailor Ted – We are lucky to have two resident bears in Sky Class.  Charlie and Sailor Ted like to go home with a different child each day. The children can draw or write about their adventures in his diary and they can then share it with the class the next day.   We will start to send them home if and when restrictions allow us too.

Hopefully the information gives you a bit more information about Sky Class.  If you have any concerns or questions about your child or our routines, then please do not hesitate to speak to send us a message via dojos.   We hope that this will be another fun and happy year.

Yours sincerely,

Sky Class Team
